Advocacy

I spent the last two days training peer mediators from my school. These typical peers are going to team with my students to build mutually beneficial social relationships. I am beyond thrilled to have encountered so many enthusiastic youth who want to be a part of this disability advocacy! Riding the bus back to school with these general education students made my heart very full for a few reasons:
  • This is an opportunity my students have not had before. They will benefit deeply from such big-hearted youth who are itching to be a part of their lives!
  • The kids were on the back of the bus singing worship songs. This struck me-- totally something I would've done in middle school too. I love how on fire middle schoolers can be, for whatever cause.
  • This is an opportunity my kids in Peru will not be afforded. Facing the adversity of survival, Vivian, Shakira, and Arturo would of course benefit from social skills instruction, but primarily their needs are food, shelter, and understanding.
  • We are fortunate in America to have an empathetic nature. While this may hold true in Cuzco as well, those with disabilities are not a population which receives this empathy. One aim of the Peru Project is to build awareness for all of those with disabilities by educating the community about the strengths and glories within each human. By educating the community, our hopes are that those with disabilities will be honored as a part of the population, and receive the empathy and understanding that other oppressed people groups may receive.
  • I want more. I want more for my students at Mabry, and I want more for my students in Peru. It is in my nature to ache for more, and today I ached for understanding for my kids: That the peer mediators would see not only a "volunteer opportunity," but an opportunity to get to know someone with so much to offer. I want this at Mabry, and I want this in Cuzco.
Just some thoughts that I'm scribbling down. This is not a formal, proofed post; it is just some statements of my heart today.

All my lovin', I would give to you. Support our efforts: http://tiny.cc/peruproject
