As Americans, we are surrounded by the marginalized population. There are people living on the streets. There are people living with debilitating illness and disability right next door. We work and live and shop alongside people with the invisible illnesses- migraines, autism, bipolar. Our friends and family's homes are being foreclosed on. When did it become so easy to look away? That is the charm and curse of the States-- the ability to live alongside the marginalized without consequence.
So while I have been challenging you all to become a part of this global movement, I am taking this night to challenge you otherwise. Whether or not you dwell in affluence, you are a member of an affluent society. Take this week to look at your neighbor, consider your brother, and speak with your friend. Become aware of the battles faced in your community and become an empathetic vessel for change.
It may be crazy to ask you to look away from Peru right now, with only 3 days left to make fundraising quota. But tonight, this is my heart.
